A Legacy of Community: Our History
On August 30, 1993, it was announced that 75% of Winona E. Lohff’s estate—totaling $835,909—would be gifted to the City of Holstein to support the construction and maintenance of a community center.
Born and raised in Holstein, Winona Lohff was a dedicated school teacher who taught in Harlan, Laurens, Cherokee, and Sac City. Her legacy lives on through this facility, named in honor of her family: the Lohff-Schumann Memorial Community Center.

- A new, larger weight room
- A dedicated fitness classroom for group classes and youth gymnastics
Continuing the Mission
Over the last two decades, the Center has welcomed thousands of residents and visitors. Though equipment, layout, and leadership have changed, the mission remains the same: to serve Holstein's residents through accessible health, wellness, and recreation.
We invite you to be part of this thriving legacy—through membership, classes, or community events!
