LIVING IN HOLSTEIN

Holstein is small, progressive community of about 1500 people located in Ida County in northwest Iowa, at the junction of Highways 20 and 59.

It is a planned community with a progressive business district and wide, tree-lined streets. Holstein has a Mayor-Council form of government and a below-average tax rate.

There are a wide variety of Community Service Organizations, including a Federated Women's Club, Kiwanis and Boy & Girl Scouts.

Three Churches are located within the City: Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, and The United Methodist Church.

A public Swimming Pool is one of the things that make Holstein a fun place to raise a family. The Pool offers Red Cross swimming lessons to people of all ages. The pool and is available for pool parties as well as open swimming from Memorial Day through Labor Day.  

A City-owned taxi service offers shuttle service within the City for the elderly, the infirm and young children. Rides are available for persons of all ages. Reservations for rides can be made by calling City Hall.

The Lohff-Schumann Memorial Community Center has two racquetball courts, a full gym, weight room, cardio-exercise room, sauna and hot tub, game room, TV room, and a community room that can be rented for either social or business functions. A baseball and softball complex adjoins the Center. The Community Parks and Recreation Dept. offers youth baseball, softball, T-ball, soccer, basketball, gymnastics, and swim team . Adult programs available are basketball, racquetball, aerobics, kickboxing and water aerobics. There is a special fitness program for seniors as well as many planned activities.

The Stubbs Memorial Library has an outstanding selection of books, magazines, periodicals, audio-books and videos. The computer room provides access to Internet. The Library is a member of the Regional Library System. Many unique historical and information displays are featured each month.

Two city parks and a nine-hole semi-private Golf Course are within the city limits.

BUSINESS & INDUSTRY

With its prime location at the junctions of US Highways 20 and 59, Holstein has easy access to both north/south and east/west interstate highways. The area offers a pool of skilled workers and access to air and rail transportation is only 40 minutes away.

Several businesses serve the people of Holstein. These include a grocery store, pharmacy/gift store, hardware store with dry cleaning pickup and small engine service/repair, plumbing and heating businesses, contractors, electricians, florist/gift shop, craft store, photography, antique and art/framing studio, antique/secondhand store, food locker, liquor/gift shop, , convenience stores and service stations.

Holstein boasts several restaurants and lounges and catering services. There is a movie theater that also provides movie rentals. These rentals are also available at one of the convenience stores. 

There are Chevrolet/Buick and Ford car dealerships as well as repair shops and a vehicle parts store.

Two real estate businesses serve the community. One of these is also an auction company, having been in business for over 100 years in Holstein.

V-T Industries Inc. located within the City limits began in 1956 and has enjoyed regular growth. It is an International leader in the manufacture of high-pressure decorative laminate post-formed countertops, desk tops, doors for commercial and institutional use and other laminated components. Corporate headquarters is in Holstein with plants in five other states and Canada.

Holstein Manufacturing Inc. is a local manufacturer producing a variety of products including Maxi-Barbecues, Smokers, Grills and Cookers, concession trailers, Maxi-Dry corn burners and other industrial furnaces.

Holstein has several Agriculture related companies. A Dairy, located just outside of Holstein, ships milk all over the United States. An Ethanol plant is also located nearby and the City has a Cooperative Elevator, as well as feed, fertilizer and seed businesses.  A Veterinary Clinic catering to both large and small animals is also located in Holstein.

EDUCATION

The Galva-Holstein Community School District, working with parents, community members and staff, provides a quality education for its young people. The school district boasts an 18 to 1 student/teacher ratio. Almost all of the high school students participate in extracurricular activities. A high percentage of the graduates attend a post-secondary school with over half attending four-year colleges and universities.   Holstein's close proximity to post-secondary schools makes adult continuing education accessible. Both a University and technical school are within 30 minutes of Holstein.

   

SERVICES

Two financial institutions serve the community and offer a variety of loan and deposit products. Insurance agencies provide property/casualty and life insurance through several nationally known companies. CPA and accounting services are also available.

Holstein has two weekly newspapers that cover local as well as regional news.

Holstein has a barber and several beauty salons. Tanning and nail care is also available.

HEALTH RELATED SERVICES

Two medical clinics serve the residents.   Hospitals are within 20 minutes away. Holstein has a well-trained volunteer fire – ambulance – rescue service equipped with the latest in lifesaving equipment. 

Holstein also has a dentist office and a chiropractic clinic. Hospice services are also available.

The Good Samaritan Center is a 60 skilled nursing bed facility with 21 private rooms. The Loving Care Unit offers services for Alzheimer’s and other dementia related diseases. Adult Day Care is available and the Center provides “meals on wheels” service at noon during weekdays.

Char-Mac, an assisted living facility, has recently opened in Holstein.
